I believe each person has the capacity for a deeply meaningful and fulfilling life even in the midst of our current challenging and chaotic times. I draw on principles of Jungian depth psychology, finding meaning and purpose in painful life experiences.

Sandplay

A Soulful Path of Self-Exploration and Healing

Within the simple act of arranging and playing in the sand, we enter a realm of profound self-exploration and healing. As our hands move the grains of sand, we tap into a language beyond words—a language that speaks directly to our unconscious, bypassing the limitations of the rational mind. It is in this nonverbal realm that the true essence of sandplay resides.

Sandplay creates a safe and sacred container for our psyche to express itself. The sand becomes a blank canvas, inviting us to shape and mold our inner world. As we carefully select miniature figures—a representation of archetypes, people, animals, and objects—we create a tangible representation of our inner experiences, conflicts, and desires. Each figure carries its own symbolic weight, resonating with aspects of our being that long for recognition and integration.

The act of placing these figures in the sand forms a living mandala—a sacred pattern that reflects the intricate tapestry of our inner lives. As we engage with the Sandplay process, we witness the emergence of themes, patterns, and dynamics that are often hidden from our conscious awareness. It is as if the unconscious, with its innate wisdom, reveals itself through the symbolic arrangements, mirroring our deepest truths and unspoken narratives.

Through Sandplay, we gain access to the depths of our unconscious, enabling us to explore and make sense of our inner landscapes. It serves as a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious, facilitating the integration of fragmented aspects of ourselves, healing unresolved wounds, and fostering personal growth.

As we engage in the Sandplay process, a transformative alchemy takes place. The unconscious energies that have been suppressed or disregarded find a voice, and the process of integration begins. Through witnessing and reflecting upon the Sandplay scenes, we gain insights, clarity, and a profound sense of self-awareness. We gain the opportunity to re-author our narratives, release old patterns, and forge a path of healing and wholeness.

A Sacred Practice

Sandplay offers a gentle and non-judgmental space for self-discovery and healing. It allows us to explore the depths of our emotions, memories, and traumas without the pressure of verbalizing or analyzing. The symbolic language of Sandplay speaks directly to our soul, creating a sense of safety, containment, and freedom for our deepest truths to unfold.

Sandplay is not merely a therapeutic modality; it is a sacred practice—an invitation to embark on a soulful journey of self-discovery and healing. It is an opportunity to connect with the essence of our being, to honor our inner wisdom, and to engage in a creative dialogue with the unconscious. In the realm of Sandplay, the soul finds its voice, and the healing journey unfolds with profound depth, compassion, and transformative power.

History of Sandplay

Dora Kalff was the founder of Sandplay therapy. Kalff was a student of Carl Jung and spent a year training with Margaret Lowenfeld, who developed the World Technique, an early form of play therapy. Influenced by both mentors, Kalff created Sandplay therapy as a unique and powerful tool for accessing the unconscious and promoting psychological healing.

Dora Kalff (1904-1990)

From Sandplay: A Psychotherapeutic Approach to the Psyche:

“The symbol embodies an image of a content transcending consciousness and points to the eternal foundation of our God-given nature. We recognize it and experience it, and it guides us toward the essential dignity of being human.” (Kalff, 1981, p. 7)

“Psychotherapeutic work has proven that a healthy development of the ego can take place only as a result of the successful manifestation of the Self, whether as a dream symbol or as a depiction in the sandbox. Such a manifestation of the Self seems to guarantee the development and consolidation of the personality.” (Kalff, 1981, p. 29)

The manifestation of the Self, this inner order, this pattern wholeness, is the most important moment of development of personality.
